The Individualist
Caroline has been an Outlaw Trendsetter for six years. She’s the hippest scientist we know, if not the hippest scientist who ever lived. Caroline breaks stereotypes without even thinking about it; a lifetime of doing things her own way, whether it’s in careers or clothing styles, has made her a completely unique and self-assured individual. She’s great for studies in almost any category, as her interests are so broad. Here are selections from a 2008 interview with Caroline:

Job “I work at the UCSF Genomics Core Facility, doing gene sequencing and genotyping.”
Hobbies “Music, going to shows, painting, traveling, reading. Lately I’m into reading the Economist and listening to BBC and NPR podcasts. I’m trying to become more worldly.”
Future Goals “I’m about to start applying for a masters program in environmental analytical chemistry. One of the things I might do with that degree is test products, make sure products are safe for people and for the environment. I’d like to be able to do something good for the world.”
Favorite Brands “I love H&M. They’re so reasonably priced for how stylish the clothes are. I also love Marc Jacobs. It’s soft and feminine yet funky. And I’m totally an Apple girl – great products, user-friendly, designed with smooth lines.”
Past experiences “In high school I had a weird medical problem where I lost feeling in my arm for a few months. As a result I started to get really interested in science, and decided I wanted to pursue it. In college I studied biology with a minor in chemistry. I was always the only blonde person in my class.”
On the SF music scene “It’s crazy how the whole folk scene that started here is getting so huge. Devendra Banhart used to sleep on my couch, and now he’s dating Natalie Portman. Andy from Vetiver was my old roommate and he’s also doing really well. I open up my gossip rags and see people I used to know.”
Her personal style “I’m very into comfort. I like big oversized items with pockets. It’s all about being cute yet natural and comfortable at the same time.”
